Markdown Tools

Markdown is plain text with light formatting marks, used for READMEs, documentation, notes and chat. Open .md files rendered like on GitHub, or write Markdown with a live preview – all in your browser.

What is Markdown?

Markdown is a way to write formatted text using ordinary characters: # for headings, * or _ for emphasis, - for lists, backticks for code and pipes for tables. The source stays readable as plain text, and a renderer turns it into HTML. That is why READMEs on GitHub and GitLab, documentation sites, wikis, note-taking apps such as Obsidian, static site generators and many chat tools all use Markdown. GitHub Flavored Markdown adds tables, task lists, strikethrough and automatic links to the original syntax. Markdown files usually end in .md or .markdown and can be opened by any text editor, but only a renderer shows them as intended.

Typical tasks

The first task is usually reading. An .md file opened in a plain text editor shows raw symbols instead of a formatted document, and not every computer has a Markdown app installed. The Markdown Viewer renders it GitHub-style, with a table of contents, highlighted code blocks, math formulas and diagrams, and can export the result as a single HTML file.

The second task is writing: a README for a new project, release notes, a blog post or documentation. The Markdown Editor puts the source and a live preview side by side, adds a formatting toolbar for bold, links, lists, tables and code, keeps a draft in your browser so a closed tab does not lose your text, and exports to .md, HTML or PDF.

If you need to check how the exported HTML behaves, open it in the HTML Viewer.

Private by design

Markdown files are rendered locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. The rendered HTML is sanitized before it is shown, so a document with embedded scripts cannot run code on this page, and diagrams are drawn in an isolated sandbox. Drafts saved by the editor stay in this browser’s local storage on your device and can be deleted at any time.

FAQ

How do I open an .md file online?

Open the Markdown Viewer and choose the .md file, drop it on the page or paste its text. It is rendered right away with headings, tables, task lists and highlighted code.

Can I convert Markdown to HTML or PDF?

Yes. Both the viewer and the editor export a standalone HTML page with inline styles, and Print / PDF in the editor saves the rendered document as a PDF.

Should I use the Markdown Viewer or the Markdown Editor?

Use the viewer to read a README or documentation file. Use the editor to write or change Markdown with a formatting toolbar, a live preview and an automatically saved draft.

Is there an MD viewer for Windows, Mac or Android?

These tools are web pages, so they work in any modern browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS without installing an app or extension.

Are my documents uploaded?

No. Markdown is rendered by your browser, and drafts are kept only in this browser on your device.
